SO MUCH ENERGY!! …. is what I want to be saying midway through the trail. I think I can safely say that most people love trail mix. Who wouldn’t love a sweet, salty, crunchy (and maybe a little spicy?) snack in a single handful?Β 

Below is the Trail Mix Formula: awesome ideas to create delicious and energy boosting trail mix, whatever your personal fitness goals, or your tastebuds πŸ˜‰Β 

THE TRAIL MIX FORMULA

 

Chocolate: Weird, how did this get first on my list? πŸ˜‰ Hiking is a great excuse to get your chocolate on.

The Classics: M&Ms Regular or Peanut, Milk, Dark or White Chocolate Chips.

Mix It Up: Mini Peanut Butter Cups, Chocolate Chia, Chocolate Coffee Beans

 

Nuts: Basically a trail mix necessity, and a classic- for a reason! Loaded with healthy fats, protein and fibre, nuts will take you far on your trails.

The Classics: Peanuts, Cashews, Almonds

Mix It Up: Brazil Nuts, Pistachios, Pine Nuts

 

Seeds: An awesome alternative for all of my nut free friends- seeds provide many of the same nutritional benefits as nuts.

The Classics: Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds

Mix It Up: Hemp Seeds, Chia Seeds, Sesame Seeds

 

Dried Fruits: Grab the type without added sugar, it’s awesome and sweet on its own in moderation!

The Classics: Banana Chips, Cranberries, Blueberries, Pineapple

Mix It Up: Mango, Figs, Goji Berries Β 

 

A Little Spice: Something to give it that extra zing! People will wonder what your secret ingredient is!

The Classics: Sea Salt, Cinnamon

Mix It Up: Cayenne Pepper Flakes, Curry

 

The Kitchen Sink: What other goodies are hidden in your kitchen? Marshmallows, coconut flakes, pretzel sticks, popcorn, cheerios? It would be good to add some complex carbohydrates to your mix, so grab something whole wheat for some extra crunch.

 

Choose ingredients for your personal goals! If you’re aiming for something healthy, choose dark chocolate and chia seeds. Grab the salt and sugar free versions of your dried fruit and nuts, and go easy on the extra goodies. If it’s dessert time on the trails- grab those marshmallows and peanut butter cups and go crazy!
